Meet Arhaus: Sustainable, Heirloom-Quality Furnishings

Arhaus, a name synonymous with luxury and sustainability in home furnishings, has been a leading force in the industry since its inception in 1986. Founded by John Reed and his father, Arhaus has grown from a single vision into a brand with over 100 locations across the United States. Holly Porter, Director of Retail Business Development & Trade at Arhaus, shares insights into the company’s history, values, and what sets them apart in today’s market.

“Arhaus was founded with the mission to create premium, heirloom-quality home furnishings,” says Porter. “This commitment to quality has remained at the core of the brand, ensuring that each piece of furniture is not only beautifully designed but also built to last. When clients choose Arhaus, they can expect quality craftsmanship, innovative design, a wide array of customization options, and client-first service,” Porter emphasizes.

Global Sourcing and Artisan Partnerships

One of the key factors that makes Arhaus unique is its dedication to working directly with artisans from around the world. “Arhaus works with artisans across the globe to directly source products from the talented people who create them,” Porter explains. The Arhaus team travels extensively, seeking out the finest materials and forging enduring partnerships with skilled artisans, ensuring that every piece tells a story and embodies the highest standards of craftsmanship.

Sustainability isn’t just a buzzword at Arhaus—it’s a deeply ingrained value that has guided the company since its early days. “Our founders were motivated by the idea that furniture should be sustainably sourced, lovingly made, and built to last,” says Porter. The company has upheld a long-standing commitment to environmental responsibility, with one example including its pledge to never use wood harvested from rainforests. “We’ve kept that pledge for over 35 years and continue to grow our efforts, using sustainably sourced, reclaimed, and recycled materials as much as possible,” she adds.

Trends That Blend Style with Functionality

In today’s design landscape, Porter notes a shift toward increased functionality that aligns with individual lifestyles. “Whether opting for performance fabrics in homes with children or pets, or selecting motion seating that's supremely comfortable yet still chic, there are ways to achieve a luxurious look and feel without sacrificing practicality,” she says. Additionally, there’s a growing preference for natural elements and color palettes, bringing the outdoors inside. “Materials like stone and wood have risen in popularity, and Arhaus offers multiple finish options across a range of pieces to allow for customization,” Porter explains. Mixed material pieces, like those in Arhaus’ Saint Germain collection, are particularly well-suited to this trend, offering a blend of elegance and natural beauty.

Arhaus made its mark on the Pillsbury Castle Project as well, collaborating with multiple designers to provide curated items that enhance the impact of each space. “There is a big emphasis on our lighting in several rooms, and we also have some custom upholstered pieces in the Grand Salon like our Bottoni Chairs and the Adalynn Sofas,” Porter says. Arhaus products can be found throughout the castle, including in the Grand Salon, Kitchen, Music Room, Guest Bedrooms 2 & 3, Primary Closet, and Family Room.
