Pillsbury Castle Reveal: Bedrooms and Closets

All images by Spacecrafting

After 10 months of renovation, the Pillsbury Castle Project opened its doors to the public for three weeks in July 2024, serving as the American Society of Interior Design (ASID) Design Home 2024 in collaboration with the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI). Between September 2023 and July 2024, 30 designers and eight remodelers transformed the home, culminating in a public tour that showcased the best in remodeling inspiration, interior design, and preservation craft.

This 12,000-square-foot historic Tudor Revival, built in 1903 for Alfred Fiske Pillsbury, the son of Pillsbury Co-Founder John S. Pillsbury, was once the site of lavish parties, an expansive art collection, and plans that helped shape the beauty of Minneapolis.

Matthew Trettel and Ryan Hanson purchased the home with the goal of preserving it, preventing it from becoming another of the period mansions being demolished in and around Minneapolis. They intend to raise their family, gather the community, and honor the Pillsburys by serving as stewards of the property, ensuring it stands for another 120 years.

There are six bedrooms throughout the home, and we have an inside look at each one revealing the shocking “before” and “after” pictures.

Second Floor: Primary Bedroom

DESIGNER: Chris Happel, Allied ASID | Rhonda Smith, Associate ASID, Ethan Allen
REMODELER: Quality Cut Design | Remodel

Entering the Primary Suite sends you on a voyage of serenity. This wing of the home was once occupied by Eleanor Pillsbury where she had her very own bedroom, closet, and bathroom surely fit for a queen. With the help of Ethan Allen designers Christine Happel, Allied ASID, and Rhonda Smith, Associate ASID, the new homeowners will occupy each square foot as a getaway of their own. Quality Cut Design | Remodel had their work cut out for them with significant construction of this wing.

Renovation began by removing and relocating the radiators for a more functional layout. New quartersawn oak floors replaced aging floors that were beyond repair. Decorative moldings were applied to the moody walls and two accent trays were installed to accentuate the separate spaces. The existing fireplace tile was restored and doors custom-made by Bayer Built complete the fine details.

Before

After

Curating the Primary Bedroom as a personal retreat for the homeowners was the vision that designers aimed to bring to life. The historic fireplace, with its original green tile and unique moldings, was a cherished feature that had to remain intact, serving as the starting point for the design. To blend the homeowners' desire for contemporary furnishings with the room’s historic charm, the designers embraced the contrast between old and new.

The large space, divided by the fireplace, was split into two areas: a bedroom and a sitting room. A modern twist on the tray ceiling features double inverted crowns inset with faux metallic cork wallpaper, defining each area. This is highlighted by exquisite Visual Comfort crystal chandeliers framed by the crowns. Through some clever searching and social media magic, the designers sourced a discontinued Ethan Allen bookcase with matching arched molding. This bookcase, now a built-in with a TV lift system, complements the suite beautifully. Painted in Sherwin Williams Forged Steel, the bookcase, along with the walls and trim, adds a sense of drama to the room.

Second Floor: Primary Closet

DESIGNER: Mike Rataczak, Allied ASID, Mike Rataczak Studios
REMODELER: Quality Cut Design | Remodel

Eleanor’s personal closet and bathroom functioned well for her needs in the early 1900s but needed to be rethought for today. Mike Rataczak, Allied ASID, of Mike Rataczak Studios was in for the job of designing both the Primary Closet. The team at Quality Cut Design | Remodel worked closely with Mike to devise the perfect layout.

Restoration of the Primary Closet and Bathroom started by swapping their original locations and relocating hallway doors and windows for a better layout. This new design showcased the existing architectural features beautifully.

Before

After

The Primary Closet was designed as an elegant gentleman’s dressing room, perfectly complementing the adjacent primary bedroom and bathroom. The designer, along with California Closets, focused on maximizing functionality and maintaining a luxurious aesthetic.

To make the most of the space, they designed two banks of floor-to-ceiling cabinets with built-in lighting, highlighting the room's impressive ceiling height. A wall-to-wall dresser connects these cabinets, while pine-colored glass panels echo the green tile in the Primary Bedroom’s fireplace. The cabinetry is painted a smokey black paired with heavily textured, reflective wallpaper in black, camel, and gray. The floor features a black wool area rug with a simple Greek key pattern from INTERSOURCE by STARK, and a round ottoman in burnished brown leather adds a touch of sophistication. Lighting is rich and curated, with an Arhaus contemporary brass and glass chandelier and a Visual Comfort wall sconce wrapped in black and gold.

Second Floor: Gift Wrapping Closet

DESIGNER: Mike Rataczak, Allied ASID, Mike Rataczak Studios
REMODELER: Quality Cut Design | Remodel

In the middle of renovations, it was discovered that Guest Suite 1 had some excess square footage that was unused. The creative team at Twin Cities Closet Company saw an opportunity and suggested that it be used as a gift-wrapping closet. The homeowners were all in and tapped Mike Rataczak to assist in designing this compact space.

Each corner was maximized with bright orange floor-to-ceiling drawers and cabinets. Ample in-closet lighting was installed for precise visibility when assembling gifts.

Second Floor: Guest Suite 1

DESIGNER: Heidi Dockter, Allied ASID | Marie Meko, Allied ASID | Karena Monaghan, Allied ASID, Gabberts Design Studio
REMODELER: Quality Cut Design | Remodel

Guest Suite 1 would have been part of Eleanor Pillsbury’s suite, likely her bedroom. The homeowners intend to use this space for guests to stay while they are in town, and Heidi Dockter, Allied ASID, Marie Meko, Allied ASID, and Karena Monaghan, Allied ASID, of Gabberts Design Studio designed a sweet retreat. They were given the freedom to create a more feminine and elegant feel than the rest of the home. They achieved this by using a palette of neutral grays with pops of gold, resulting in a soothing and relaxing ambiance for guests. The room features modern classic furnishings, carefully selected artwork, a hand-painted ceiling by Laura Margo Murals & Custom Art, and plush bedding, all contributing to an oasis of luxury and sophistication.

Before

On the remodeling side, led by Quality Cut Design | Remodel, original millwork profiles were crafted to match existing woodwork, and two cased openings with seven-part head casings were meticulously recreated.

A feature fireplace wall was constructed, housing a newly installed gas fireplace, and an antique marble mantle from the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City. This special fireplace was imported as an antique from France when the hotel was built in 1930. The Waldorf-Astoria was also the home of the first Pillsbury Bake-Off in 1949, so it was meant to be!

A sweet sitting area for two, with comfortable chairs and a small table, offers the perfect spot for a quiet conversation or a morning cup of coffee from the coffee just inside the custom Twin Cities Closet Company closet. Thoughtful touches, like soft lighting, a textured rug from INTERSOURCE by STARK, and decorative pillows add to the overall sense of opulence and comfort. The result is a guest suite that combines charm with comfort, providing a serene retreat that feels both inviting and luxurious.

Second Floor: Kids’ Bedroom

DESIGNER: Lucy Penfield, Allied ASID, Lucy Interiors
REMODELER: J3 Renovation & Design

One step into the Kids’ Bedroom and you’re instantly immersed in a fairytale where dreams come true. Designed by Lucy Penfield, Allied ASID, of Lucy Interiors, this wonderland serves as a happy place where magical things happen. Believed to once be Alfred Pillsbury’s sitting room, J3 Renovation & Design worked to preserve and restore as much of the room as possible to retain its original charm. This is one of the homeowners’ most cherished rooms as they will begin starting their family soon.

Remodeling this space began by ensuring everything that could be restored was done so carefully. With the exception of creating access to the new bathroom, all the trim remained untouched. New hardwood flooring was installed for consistency with the rest of the home. Adding in the built-in bench and custom stage ensures that this space will become a favorite hangout spot for the homeowners’ future children.

Before

After

Inspired by whimsical characters like Peter Pan and the magical Tinker Bell, this room sparkles with enchantment. The space features fairytale-like areas such as a Magic Wardrobe, a Princess and the Pea Bed Chamber, a Storytelling Tower, and a Magical Theater stage hand-painted by Children's Theatre. This room is a haven where children can dream and imagine, transporting them to their own Neverland filled with endless stories and adventures.

Reflecting an English-inspired interior, the Children’s Room is adorned with playful stripes and colorful prints sewn by Seams Like a Good Idea. Fanciful light fixtures from Visual Comfort and a trellis wallcovering from Thibaut add a nostalgic touch. Painted furniture and a palette of blues and greens, accented with a hint of sunshine, bring quintessential charm to the space. Classic details like canopy-style beds and whimsical elements enhance the make-believe atmosphere. Peek into the custom closet by Twin Cities Closet Company and you'll uncover adorable outfits and accessories from Pacifier.

Third Floor: Guest Suite 2

DESIGNER: Laura Engen, Allied ASID , Laura Engen Interior Design
REMODELER: EdgeWork Design Build

Guest Suite 2, located in the west wing of the third level, likely housed Alfred and Eleanor’s employees who worked for them in the home. Today, this once singular space has been transformed into a plush bedroom with a luxurious en suite bathroom. Designed by Laura Engen, Allied ASID, of Laura Engen Interior Design, this suite is reminiscent of a luxury hotel stay. EdgeWork Design Build expertly split the room while working within the slanted ceiling lines on all sides, creating a perfect blend of comfort and elegance.

Before

After

Design began with a focus on creating a warm and inviting space for guests. To achieve this, the designer incorporated wood paneling that matches the intricate detail found throughout the home. Adding a contemporary twist, she chose a dark gray paint color called Forged Steel from Sherwin Williams for the trim, which repeats throughout the house to create a moody vibe that reflects the homeowners' modern style. To enhance the dramatic effect, this dark gray tone was added to all trim and windows, contrasting beautifully with the white textured wallpaper from Thibaut used on the walls and sloped ceilings.

The room's ambiance is further heightened by a dark-painted ceiling that complements the trim and wainscoting. Glass light fixtures with brass accents from Arhaus were selected to add decadence and warmth, creating a luxurious feel. The furniture in the suite is chosen to complement the architectural features and enhance the rich aesthetic of the space. A unique feature of this room is the coffee bar located in the entry vestibule, complete with a beverage fridge, providing guests with added comfort and convenience during their stay.

Guest Suite 3

DESIGNER: April Goodman, Allied ASID, April Star Interiors
REMODELER: Holly Home Renovations

Guest Suite 3 feels miles away from the rest of the Pillsbury Castle, thanks to the design of April Goodman, Allied ASID, of April Star Interiors. She worked alongside Holly Home Renovations who carefully remodeled this suite that began as one room and was split into a cozy bedroom and spectacular en suite bathroom. The homeowners will use this area to welcome guests near and far.

Renovations involved adding a wall into the middle of the room to create space for the new en suite bathroom. The hardwood floors were replaced, and the walls were patched up as well. New electrical and plumbing were installed, and fresh coats of paint line the walls and ceiling.

Before

After

The walls, adorned with moody jewel tones, evoke the bustling markets of Marrakech and the charming streets of Europe. The designer infused the room with eclectic energy, blending exotic patterns and textiles from around the world, including stunning Hunter Douglas drapery from Total Window Design.

The custom twin beds, with their Gothic peak headboards, draw your eyes upward to the intricate ceiling detail and the grand Arhaus chandelier. Cozy, layered bedding and a hand-painted mural by Laura Margo Murals & Custom Art provide a perfect backdrop for guests to relax and dream of far-off destinations. A charming windowed alcove invites you to pause with a good book or gaze out at the neighborhood below. Apartment Bedroom

DESIGNER: Sarah Hughes, Allied ASID, Albertsson Hansen Architecture and Design Ltd.
REMODELER: Holly Home Renovations

Previously used as a short-term rental by past homeowners, Albertsson Hansen Architecture and Design reconfigured the space into three distinct zones: the bedroom, the bathroom, and a living area complete with a kitchenette. Holly Home Renovations led the thorough remodeling efforts in the Apartment. This space will be the ideal haven for friends and family of the homeowners to stay when they are in town.

Many of the original doors were stripped and refinished, preserving the home’s historical integrity. Extensive structural rot repair was done behind the walls, addressing years of water damage from the roof valleys, ensuring the space’s longevity and safety.

Before

After

Inspired by the idea of a Secret Garden — a “gardener’s garden” that feels a bit wild and unrestrained, the designer aimed to create a space that feels separate from the rest of the home, as if you’re stepping into another world. The colors and patterns evoke a connection to nature, creating a bright and cheerful atmosphere. This vision comes to life with chic furniture from Contemporary Furnishings by Granby, bold Thibaut wallpaper installed by Cutting Edge, Inc, and so much more.

The refurbished Apartment honors its storied past while offering guests an impeccable retreat. It features a meticulously designed kitchen and living room, a tranquil bedroom, and an opulent bathroom. The layout has been completely reworked for enhanced functionality. Handcrafted tiles in the bathroom and kitchen backsplash add distinctive charm, complemented by intricate millwork and carefully selected wallpaper adorning every surface. Vibrant hues throughout the space infuse it with energy and warmth, creating an inviting ambiance.
