Meet the Third Floor Designers

INTRO

Family Room and Kids Room

We tasked the University Minnesota College of Design with the redesign of the living space on the third floor. The challenge here is that what was once an open space with a staircase in the middle is now being split into two spaces: A Family Room and a Kids’ Playroom. The Family Room will serve as a gathering place for the homeowners to make many memories in with their children. The Kids’ Playroom is the perfect nook for them to get whisked away in a wonderland fit for a child.

Below you’ll see photos of the rooms taken in early 2023 before renovation began.

The first two images show the cozy and functional Family Room. Playful furniture is paired with textural wallpaper and pops of color. On the right, a circus-themed room sets the stage for a room where kids can let their imaginations run wild. Ohana Home & Design is taking the lead on remodeling these spaces so Anne and the students can ensure every square inch is transformed perfectly.

Guest Bedroom #2

Laura Engen Interior Design takes on Guest Bedroom 2. Like many bedrooms in the house, the room was once an oversized space and will be split into a bedroom area and a luxurious en suite bathroom. New flooring, wall coverings, light fixtures, and closets will give a much-needed update to this room. EdgeWork Design Build is working closely with Laura to build a comfy retreat where they can relax and rewind.

“As an interior designer and mother of three boys, I know firsthand how a beautiful, functional, and personalized home makes family life more meaningful and enjoyable,” Laura shares. “Alongside my team of builders, architects, and skilled tradespeople, I specialize in designing whole-home renovations, complete room transformations, and home furnishing projects around the Twin Cities. Together, we create homes that feel effortless and inspire your family’s happiest memories.”

In the renderings below, dark gray wainscotting anchors the bedroom as white textured wallpaper spans the upper half of the walls. Brass light fixtures and simple yet impactful decor bring the room to life. The cherry on top is a coffee bar in the entry vestibule offering a luxury hotel-like experience.

Guest Bedroom 3

April Goodman of April Star Interiors is transforming Guest Bedroom 3 and the adjoining bathroom into yet another sanctuary getaway on the third floor. Just like Guest Bedroom 2, this once singular space will also be split into a bedroom area and a tranquil full bathroom. With some clever redesign and a fresh floor plan, guests will never want to leave.

“Our passion lies in creating spaces that not only reflect our clients’ unique personality and style but also nurtures their souls,” April shares. "We love to get to know the families we are working with, including their vision, lifestyle and aspirations, ensuring that every design decision aligns with their unique needs. We collaborate, providing expert guidance and suggestions while honoring their individuality. We believe that our home tells our stories and that the narrative is made up of our traditions, families, culture and travels. In creating homes the way we do, our deepest desire is that our clients are in their happiest place when they are at home.”

April is taking inspiration from international travels incorporating saturated colors, exotic patterns, and worldly tiles. Art is abundant in every corner, even the ceiling. April’s design includes a hand-painted mural across the entire ceiling inviting the mind to wander.

“I am honored and thrilled to be a part of the Pillsbury Castle Project. I am excited about working on a project that values restoring a historic home and bringing the community together,” Sarah shares. “I love that the homeowners want to update a 120-year-old home to not only meet their needs in the present, but to preserve the history, and make sure it will benefit future generations in the next 120 years. Renovating an old home into a comfortable and functional living space is a uniquely rewarding experience that also fosters a sense of environmental responsibility. Restoring the existing structure and architectural elements will also contribute to the reduction in construction waste and the preservation of resources.”
